Inside these walls you can breathe History.
From here the Lords who made Imola great passed by; first the Alidosi, who governed for almost the entire XIII century. The eagle you see on this mug, found here in the Stronghold, was their crest.
Also the milanese Visconti and then the forlivesi Manfredi made the Stronghold their fortress, but only with Galeazzo Maria Sforza, lord of Milan, and of Imola from 1471 to 1473, the Stronghold underwent the first, important restoration works.
Do you know why it was necessary to undertake changes to this stronghold, which for centuries withstood army attacks?
The “brutal madness” – as I describe the war, has discovered a new, terrible weapon: gunpowder.
The stronghold walls need to be thickened to withstand cannon balls, ravelins must be created, as well as a covered road which joins the Stronghold and the closest entrance to the city together – porta Bologna (gate Bologna), to guarantee reinforcements from the outside in the event of siege.
Danesio Maineri, military architect of the Sforza, took care of this. He measured the whole city, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, to create what I will be finishing few decades later: a topographic map of the city. But we will talk about this later.
